Statistics on the Use of Collaborative Practice in Australia

Despite being frequently sought after data, there is little research on the use of Collaborative Practice in Australia.  It has become increasingly evident that we need to capture data on the true extent of the use of collaborative practice to assist with advocacy and promotion of the process as the preferred model of dispute resolution for many Australians.

 

AACP has joined with collaborative lawyer and UTS academic, Matthew Shepherd for his research project on the use of collaborative practice in Australia. To collect necessary data, Matthew has created a survey, which we ask collaborative practitioners to complete.  The survey is voluntary, confidential and anonymous.  The more collaborative practitioners that complete the survey, the more complete a picture we will have on the use of collaborative practice in Australia

The data collected will assist:

1. Collaborative Practitioners when explaining the merits of the process to clients.
2. Collaborative Practice professional associations, such as AACP and the State and Territory associations when engaging with government, courts and other professional associations nationally.
3. Collaborative Practice trainers.
4. Encourage further research into Collaborative Practice.

The time required to complete the survey will depend on how many collaborative matters you have done.  We estimate 3 minutes for those who have not done any collaborative matters, 5 to 10 minutes for those who have done a few collaborative matters and up to 20 minutes for those who have done many collaborative matters.

A bit about Matthew

Matthew is a collaborative practitioner, accredited family law specialist, mediator, family dispute resolution practitioner and a family law property arbitrator. He teaches Dispute Resolution Advocacy at the University of Technology Sydney from where he obtained a Masters in Dispute Resolution (Hons). In 2019 Matthew completed a similar survey on the use of family law property arbitration in Australia.
