QACP Lunch & Learn

Join us on Tuesday, 5 May 2026 for the next QACP Lunch & Learn 'Toolbox' Series with Helen Jarvis, Founder of Ripple Learning and Nationally Accredited Mediator, Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner, Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor.

Accidental Counsellor — Responding with Empathy and Boundaries

As collaborative practitioners, you regularly work with people under significant stress. Often you find yourself needing to respond to someone who is upset, overwhelmed, or distressed in ways that go beyond the scope of your professional role. This one-hour webinar introduces the practical skills of the Accidental Counsellor, tailored to the collaborative practice context. We will explore how to recognise the difference between a stress response to difficult circumstances and signs that may indicate a more significant mental health concern requiring a different kind of response. Knowing that distinction matters, both for the person in front of you and for how you show up professionally in the moment. From there, we’ll look at how to engage with genuine empathy in a way that makes people feel heard and safe, while also holding the boundaries that protect your own psychological wellbeing and maintain the integrity of your professional role. We’ll also introduce the Accidental Counsellor skillset so that you’ll leave with practical, immediately applicable tools for responding with confidence and care, without overstepping into territory that isn’t yours to hold.
